Benedictine friary

The history of the Benedictine friary

Primarily, in 1675 the town of Kőszeg gave the Saint James Church and the parsonage to the Jesuit order with the aim of establishing a secondary grammar school and a dormitory. The friary was built according to the plans of the Italian master builder, Pietro Orsolini. According to the customs of the age the layout of the secondary grammar school was approved in Rome. Despite the constructions of the Jesuit friary finished in 1680, they already started teaching in 1677. On the 30th of January 1700, a huge fire destroyed the town and the convent buildings also suffered significant damage. Later on, in 1710 and in 1720 there were another fire in Kőszeg. After the reconstructions, the friary opened in 1723 and the grammar school in 1726. Presumably at this time the friary was expanded. After the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773, first the Priarists got the friary and the grammar school from 1777 to 1815, and then, from 1815 to 1950, the Benedictines lived and taught here.

Based on the design material in the archives of the Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma, the recent history of the building can be easily outlined. The expansion is related to the appointment of the school as main grammar school. This required additional rooms and teachers. Several design versions have been made. Finally Ede Miller, a construction contractor from Szombathely, was entrusted with the construction of the northern annex, which includes two flats per level. He finished the layout in 1906. The design of the elegant staircase, very similar to the main staircase in Pannonhalma, and the new solution of the gallery staircase of St. James Church were planned by László Ágoston, master builder. Large, double-leaf doors and elongated, multi-parted windows appeared. This is also the time when the large, semicircular glass doors were made, which close the individual corridor sections. From 1950, flats have been built in the convent. The Benedictine order got the building back in 1990.
